A port city located at the southern tip of the sunny country of Okayama

Tamano City is located at the southern tip of Okayama Prefecture, and is a scenic port town with a warm climate, blessed with the beautiful nature of the Seto Inland Sea. As a tourist attraction, it is a port of call for regular routes and cruise ships to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and has many tourist resources such as Uno Port, which is dotted with various public art including art works from the Setouchi Triennale, scenic spots designated as Setonaikai National Park such as Shibukawa Coast and Ojigatake, Shibukawa Marine Aquarium, and Miyama Park, the largest park in the prefecture where you can enjoy nature to the fullest.

Copper Smelting

Copper and other metals have been smelted in Tamano City for a long time, and a smelter was built in the Hibi area in 1893. Copper smelted in the city is shipped not only to Japan but also to the world, where it is used in a variety of products.

When Tsuneyama Castle was besieged by the Mori forces during the Bitchu War in 1575, she led an army of 34 women in battle. Her bravery is still celebrated today.

During the Sengoku period, the Battle of Kojima Hachihama occurred when the forces of Ukita from Okayama and Mori from Aki clashed. The feat of seven brave warriors from that battle was so highly praised that they came to be known as the Hachihama Seven Spears and have been passed down to posterity.

Okaya City, Nagano Prefecture

Tamano's sister city, Okaya City, Nagano Prefecture, is an inland industrial city that produces in the Chubu region. Although the natural conditions are different from our city, which faces the Seto Inland Sea, the two cities have similar populations and industrial structures, and so the sister city relationship was established on the occasion of our city's 40th anniversary. They both have the city flower, the azalea, in common.

Exchanges between the two cities deepened through the import of live fish, and the two cities became sister cities as part of the 40th anniversary of the city's founding. Tamano City and Iwata City in Shizuoka Prefecture began their regional exchange through the connection made by Koukichi Ukita(Birdman Kokichi), the first man in the world to fly, and signed a mutual support agreement in times of disaster in October 2011 and friendship city affiliation in November 2015. The two cities also share the commonality of the azalea being their city flower.

Exchanges began when a delegation led by the mayor of Tamano visited in 1993. Since then, exchanges have progressed not only between the two governments but also on a private basis through school exchanges, the holding of art and calligraphy exhibitions, and programs to accept trainees, and in October 1996, the two cities signed a friendship city agreement.
