Osaki Hachiman Shrine and Miyayama area
The area around Osaki Hachiman Shrine and Miyayama, a designated historic site by Tamano City, was once an island where fast currents created whirlpools, and the locals called it Uzu no Miya. In 1957, the stumps of both legs of a double-legged torii gate like those on Miyajima were discovered in a reclaimed land irrigation channel 100 meters north of the current first torii gate. Excavation revealed that the gate was erected in the sea at the end of the Heian period. Based on this fact and other documents, it is thought that the shrine enshrined on the island flourished as the clan deity of the Taira clan and as a sea god. The cluster of old chestnut trees in the Miyayama area is rare and not found in the surrounding area. Anyone is free to stroll around, so why not take a stroll around the historic grounds and the surrounding area? *This is an excerpt from the explanation on the signboard erected by the Tamano City Board of Education in December 2002.
